Places to visit in Stockholm

If you plan to walk around the monuments, the most rewarding Stockholm Card (Stockholmskortet). It offers unrestricted movement of urban public transport, regional trains, trams, the ferry to Djurg?rden. It includes a free entrance to museums, sightseeing tours, parking also. The cards are valid 24, 48, or 72 hours (260 SEK, 390 SEK 540 SEK). Children under 7 are admitted free. Prior to use, you must select it. Keep in mind that a number of museums offer free entry, sometimes it pays to buy the card only for public transport links.

  • The Vasa ship capsized and sank in Stockholm 1628. After 333 years on the sea bed the mighty warship was salvaged and the voyage could continue. Today Vasa is the world's only preserved 17th century ship and the most visited museum in Scandinavia.

  • Skansen was founded by Artur Hazelius in 1891. It is the world's oldest open-air museum and is situated on the island of Djurgarden within the city limits of Stockholm. The founder's aims live on in the museum today. He wanted to bring the traditional rural culture to life by exhibiting furnished houses and farmsteads, cultivated plots and gardens and both domestic and wild animals. When Skansen started, its focus was on farming and Sami culture.

  • The museum came into existence after a major archaeological investigation. It tooks place in advance of the rebuilding of the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) and the building of garages under the present-day gardens of Riksplan. Among all the remains which came to light were parts of the Town Wall which Gustavus Vasa had built in the 1530s as well as the churchyard of the medieval Helgeandshuset (House of the Holy Spirit), which originally gave its name to the island.
